I have many of the Church cds,but have not found this track, Alot of People have gone through the Church's lyrics as well.
Here are all the bands that people have mentioned regarding this song.
The Church Blue Nile The Wake THE THE Furniture
From Paul Miceli, 2/22/2003 4:05:03 PM:
I forgot to mention, Someone also mentioned that it Sounded like- The Sound/Adrian Borland.
Cheers,
Paul
From David, 2/22/2003 5:34:21 PM:
Damn!!
I know this song from a long time ago, but I can't pull the title/artist from the cobwebs. IMHO, I don't think it is any of the artists listed above. The vocal style is a bit like Malcolm Burn of Boys Brigade (but deeper in tone). Looked at my copy of Redemption, but nothing there. Fantastic tune though...
Oh, by the way, hi to Dave Myrvold, it's been years since we spoke. I lent you some material for Hardest Hits 1.
Goog luck in your search Paul
Regards,
David (Friend of Bill)
From Dave Myrvold, 2/22/2003 7:40:03 PM:
Hello David. Perhaps the artist and title will come to you at some point. A song Paul and I would both like to know was posted by Sebastain on 11/27/2002. Also, give a listen to 2 archived posts on 10/18/2002 from Paul. Can you confirm that one of them is in fact Darkroom as a couple of people suggested. Nobody even had a guess at the other one. If you know any of those 3 leave the responses there instead of here.
Thanks, Dave
From Paul Miceli, 2/22/2003 8:05:14 PM:
Hi Dave,
I just reposted both songs.
Paul
From Cory, 2/23/2003 7:02:39 PM:
Damn! His voice sounds hauntingly familiar, but I can't place it either! I searched through my Boys Brigade vinyl and didn't see it there (just the s/t album from 1983). Arrgh!!!!
From David, 2/23/2003 10:44:09 PM:
Frustrating isn't it Cory! I know the song, I know the voice; it's been driving me crazy all day. Normally, I wouldn't mind not remembering who did a song, but this song is great. I really thought it was Malcolm, but the voice is not quite right. Keep at it folks, the answer will hit somebody sometime...

Paul, just out of curiosity, what is the source for this song? (Old tape from radio broadcast, etc.)
David
From Paul Miceli, 2/23/2003 10:56:17 PM:
Hi David,
I found it at DeDini Devils site.
It was taped from the great (Radio FFN Germany) in 1988.

I have posted this song on about 10 Yahoo New Wave groups. If someone cant solve it now,I give up. Dave I also posted Sebastions song on a yahoo group.
Good Night.
From Rick A. Mortis, 2/24/2003 6:42:40 PM:
Hey I just got a message in my Darker80s Yahoo group and went to listen to this song.. I can agree that is neither The Church, The Sound, or The Wake...
I am trying to figure it out now too though... good luck!
From Paul Miceli, 2/24/2003 7:11:31 PM:
Hi Rick,
I just posted it Darker80s and a few other yahoo groups.Lets hope someone out there can get this darn song.

This band sounds so much like the church
From michael korchia, 2/25/2003 4:14:56 PM:
the song is great... it sounds like an early sarah rcds song... it sounds a bit like the 1st orchids songs... yet it's probably older
From Paul Miceli, 2/25/2003 4:38:54 PM:
Hi Michael,
You might be right,I think this could be a band from a lable like Sarah records or Creation records.
The search goes on.
Paul
From jef, 2/25/2003 7:09:56 PM:
this is not probably the wake...
From jef, 2/25/2003 7:13:11 PM:
and not from sarah records.. not sure about creation though.
From David, 2/25/2003 9:54:46 PM:
Well, for what it's worth, I've figured out what I think are the lyrics. Let me know if it is worth posting.
David
From Paul Miceli, 2/25/2003 10:02:18 PM:
Hi David,
That sounds great, the more info we have the better our chances are.
Paul
From David, 2/25/2003 11:16:35 PM:
Paul:
After listening to this for what seems 100 times in the hope it will jog my memory, I make the lyrics to be:
A long time ago we were feeling younger still we had the world on a (key?)
but something went wrong all was not love in paradise make you feel all's undone(..not sure about this line)
and the whispers, they go on and the screams and the whispers go on
a long time ago the memory haunts us even now memories of how we once were
but as we grow old we're (all but?) shattered by the thought we must try to live it again
and the whispers, they go on and the screams and the whispers go on...
I might be having deja vu but I remember figuring out these lyrics before. I also have a vague memory of the song title having nothing to do with the lyrics.
Age is a killer!!
Regards,
David
From Paul Miceli, 2/25/2003 11:53:31 PM:
Hi David,
Does this sound right.
But something went wrong all was not right in paradise We could feel our time had come.
From David, 2/26/2003 12:06:15 AM:
Paul:
You're definately right on the last line.. amazing how many times I listened and didn't hear that. Not sure about the love /right word.
How does the rest check out??
David
From Paul Miceli, 2/26/2003 12:27:48 AM:
The rest sounds right.
I think you are right about the title of the song, having nothing to do with the lyrics. I looked everywhere and found nothing.
Paul
From David, 2/26/2003 12:41:08 AM:
I've had a fair bit of success finding songs with bits of info and backtracking to a title or artist (sometimes only to discover that I already own a copy) but this song has stumped me for years. One thing... I'm almost positive I've heard this song on NY as this was the only station I listened to from 1980 on, so the answer can't be too far away.
David
From Ecki Stieg, 2/26/2003 4:01:46 AM:
Just checked my playlists of 1988....
The Band : ESKIMOS & EGYPT
Song "Screams & Whispers"
Must have been the B-Side of one of their very early singles, bevor they became a "rave"-band (similar to Underworld..).
They are british.
One of my mates, Eric Herle (now manager of Moby and Sparks) once managed this band in London and sent me the single at that time...
you can be sure, EXTREMELY RARE ITEM!!! I'm not sure, if I have the single myself still (my archive is too big, could take me ages to find out...)
Of course, I already checked out Google for his band, but they don't even seem to have a working fanpage..
I will try to get in contact with Eric (hope HE remembers this song!!!), although I don't have his new E-Mail adress...
This looks like a very long big, interesting search...!
Fun...! :-)) That's what we live for.....! :-)))
Yours
Ecki
From Paul Miceli, 2/26/2003 4:27:04 AM:
Hi again Ecki,
Thanks again, for solving this mystery song which has baffled so many of us,I can thank you enough. It's been great Talking with you tonight. Now the search begins for this rare record.
Thanks again,
Paul
From Paul Miceli, 2/26/2003 4:59:49 AM:
Hi guys,
I justwanted to mention, if anyone would like to visit a great site, Ecki has some great Interviews with some great bands.Daf,Marc Almond, Fad Gadget/RIP Frank, Klaus Schulze, VNV Nation ,Alphaville,Das Ich and many others.
www.grenzwellen.com
From Paul Miceli, 2/26/2003 6:15:00 AM:
I forgot to mention, when Ecki wrote "Just checked my playlists of 1988" He was a DJ at Radio FFN in Germany in the 80's. Radio FFN was like CFNY was in the 80s,And that is where this song was taped off.
Also if you would like to get some great music compilations Check out (Electrocity series.from Germany, under the AUSFAHRT Lable).
They were relesed throughout the 90's,Ecki,put the tracks together for most of the volumes.
Cheers,
Paul
From James, 2/26/2003 9:32:27 AM:
Thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you to Ecki Stieg for identifying this song and thank you to Paul Miceli for working so hard to coordinate all of our efforts! It's wonderful to be able to put a name to this song.
From Cory, 2/26/2003 4:32:52 PM:
I've scoured my usual sources on the Web for rare records and all I was able to track down was that they released an album in 1988 on the label "Village Records". It was either titled, "The Cold" or "The Cold Year". So, it may be on that album. Also, they released a 7" single from that album just called "Cold", so it may be the B-side to that record. Arrgh! I wasn't able to find any used copies of any of these though.
Has anybody else had any luck tracking down the vinyl? If I find it, I'll post the track (or all of them) on SoulSeek or somewhere online.
Cheers,
Cory
From David, 2/26/2003 6:27:58 PM:
Hi Paul:
Well, shows you what I know re: the title, (remember the cobwebs!) Great work Paul!
I'm sure if there are copies out there it will be a mad dash to find one. In looking around the only 7" which looks like a candidate has "Cold" as its A side. Hopefully, Ecki can add to the info he has supplied
If anyone is fortunate enough to find a copy, please make it available on Soulseek or leave a link to its location here. I'm sure it would be greatly appreciated by quite a few people here.
Regards,
david
From Toolexpert, 2/26/2003 6:29:14 PM:
Here you can order a copy of the single 'Cold' by Eskimos & Egypt.
many thanks for solving the artist of this song. I've searched for ages, sent tapes to other music freaks and finally put it on my site http://people.freenet.de/DeDiniDevil/.
I've taped two other songs by Eskimos & Egypts ("The Cold" and "Grace" - the second one in the beginning of the "Rave"-period as Ecki mentioned.
"Screams And Whispers" is probably not the B-side of "The Cold" as I taped "Screams And Whispers" in 10/1988 and "The Cold" in 01/1989. But I may be wrong.
To Ecki (and all): Please see - and download - my other most wanted tracks - some are from Radio ffn (and probably Ecki's Powerstation) as well: http://people.freenet.de/DeDiniDevil/wanted.htm. Many thanks.
P.S.: It's curious that my search went from Hanover (where I live) over the world back to Hanover (where Ecki lives). Ecki, will I see you again on "Backstage TV"?
From Paul Miceli, 2/27/2003 3:18:38 AM:
Hi again,
Well one challenge is over and a new one begins,I think this record is going to be very hard to come by.
It would cool if there was a Radio FFN Hardest Hits, someting like Dave Myrvold did with the Hardest hits series here in Canada,I would love to have this song on cd.
James,I'm glad this 4 month search is over,if you think about, it's not that bad, poor Rene has been looking for the last 15 years. If not for Ecki,we would still be going crazy looking for this rare song.
David, your right, it will be a mad dash to find one,I hope the person who finds a copy, will let us know.
Cory and Anthony, found some good info on some of their 80's stuff. I hope Ecki finds his copy or can get in touch with Eric Herle.
Cory,I will go through the list, and let you know.
Cheers
Paul.

Just wondering if anybody was able to locate a copy of this song. Jonathan at Vinyl Tap seemed puzzled by the sudden rush of inquiries on this record.
P.S. I guess I tried to order it too late.
Don't keep the rest of us in suspense.....

From Paul Miceli, 2/28/2003 5:45:31 PM:
Hi David,
LOL. I can imagine,he must be wondering what the hell is going on here.
Do you think it is on the Cold 7". If we could find out, that would be very helpful.I noticed that the cold 7" is sold out.
if anyone knows whats on the b-side,please let us know.
Thanks,
Paul
From David, 2/28/2003 5:58:29 PM:
I asked jonathan on the off chance he had been the one to send out the record but no such luck. Vinyl Tap does sell alot of records, so it could have been packaged by one of many. My guess is whoever got the record (incidently purchased at about the time "the puzzle" was solved) asked about the B-side. In any event, in reading about the group, seems they dropped their drummer in favour of machines and sequencers and jumped in techno soon after the inception. Odds are the Cold 7" is the one. But we'll have to wait and see... this is almost worse than not knowing the title/artist!!

From David, 2/28/2003 6:03:42 PM:

From Paul Miceli, 2/28/2003 6:12:12 PM:

Paul
From Paul Miceli, 2/28/2003 6:15:38 PM:
That song is going to be another pain.Might be just as rare as the Eskimos & Egypt.
If Greg, can let us know where this song came from, that would be a great start.
From Paul Miceli, 2/28/2003 6:37:09 PM:
I dont think anything will come close to the Rene's ESKIMOS & EGYPT song.I received so many e-mails about this song, from when I first posted it in November, till now. When I first heard this great song,I knew alot of people would like it.

From michael korchia, 2/28/2003 8:21:58 PM:
i know more! i told the whole story on the indiepop list, & someone answered that to me "i've got the 7" that has The Cold / A Year / Screams And Whispers -- it's on Village Records from 1988. i'm quite fond of it -- all three songs are equally catchy -- i think there was another band with the same name (believe it or not) that surfaced later, putting out more dance oriented music -- or else the original eskimos and egypt changed style.......i can't remember the exact story, but i was told years ago that this single was the only worthwhile E&E release." i asked him if he can save the songs as mp3. let's cross fingers!
From Paul Miceli, 2/28/2003 8:30:52 PM:
Great Work Michael, you just solved a big part of the mystery.I would love to listen to the other 2 songs.
I hope he will post some mp3's of all 3 songs.

Thank's to David and Javi, for sharing this with everyone.I will have to join soulseek and check them out.
I was wondering what the other 2 songs are like.
Paul
From Javi, 3/5/2003 1:15:56 AM:
I don't like "The cold", a bit gothic and Sisters of mercy-esque :-) , but "a year" is superb!! even better than "screams & whispers" in my opinion.
From kallista, 3/6/2003 10:38:11 AM:
Hey everyone!
You guys are great! I'd also been looking for this song for ages, and now I know what I'm looking for!
It's great that you guys are kind enough to share on SoulSeek... I downloaded it to try to get the song, but I get get it to run. For some weird reason it stops running when I try to share my files.
Any ideas on another way I could obtain this tune? If someone has it and is willing to share, I'd be more than happy to work out a trade if I had anything you needed.
From Cory, 3/7/2003 1:03:58 PM:
Hi Kallista,
I've had no trouble with SoulSeek, but some people will "block" you if you don't have your share folder turned on, which may be happening to you. If you go to "Add User" and type in [cjr4], you can browse my shared folder and all 3 songs are in the folder "The Cold EP". Just right-click on it and select "Download Folder" and it should go. I have a Cable-Modem connection, so if your connection is quick too then it shouldn't take more than a few minutes to get all of the songs.
Cheers,
Cory
From Kallista, 3/7/2003 5:14:23 PM:
Trying to turn the share folder on is what causes SoulSeek to stop responding. It won't let me select a folder to save to, either. As this isn't SoulSeek's tech support forum, I won't go on about it here. ;)
I've got over 1900 tracks on my hard drive, and would be happy to share them all, I just can't get SoulSeek to co-operate with me at the moment.
Anyway, thanks for your willingness to share, I've added you both to my user list on SoulSeek, and if I can ever get it to run properly, my user name is 'wyrdsister'. Hopefully I can solve the problem and share with you guys as well. (And yes, I also have a cable connection, so no problem there!)
Thanks again!
Thanks again!
From Cory, 3/9/2003 3:02:57 PM:
Kallista,
I've added you to my User list, but it shows you're not sharing any files. Odd, but you are on my list. Good luck! :)

Wow! I spoke too soon in the other thread, Paul. A HUGE THANKS to you and Ecki, Javi, David, and everyone else who tried to find this thing! It's so beautifully sad. I was hooked on it from the moment I heard it.
BTW, Javi, I have it queued from you, just in case you'd like to know. (Username: BlackSymphony.)
Oh, and know I see why I couldn't find it on AllMusic by title...I had the title right but the thing was way too rare to be listed there. : *Case Closed* :p

We solved one of the rare songs, now we have to try and find out your synthpop song.I'm sure someone out there knows that song.
Paul
From Sebastian, 3/13/2003 3:04:06 AM:
Surely they will -- even if it takes them fifteen years! Hehe.
I'd like to make one last correction to the lyrics. In the second verse, David lists the lyrics as being, potentially:
we're (all but?) shattered by the thought
...actually, it's:
but as we grow old we're overshadowed by the thought we must try to live again
Aaand... it's goodnight from NYC.
From David, 3/14/2003 1:33:11 PM:
Your right Sebastian, after hearing the copy available from sansero, I realized that that line and a few others were not what I had thought.
No sign of copy of the record I've ordered yet, but I'm hoping when it arrives it will be a good clean copy.

Hi guys, I'm not sure if any of you are still around - this is a very old thread - but I just came across your discussion yesterday. I was the guy who set up Village Records in the UK in 1987. We released Eskimos and Egypt - 'The Cold' as a 7" vinyl single in 1988. Excellent detective work by you all!
I'm going to be setting up a bit of a nostalgia site (nothing commercial - mainly for my own interest) with info and MP3 samples of the label's releases. I haven't got time to do all that right now, but I'll post another message in the next few weeks when I've made some progress.
I still have all of the multi-track master tapes and will be transfering these to hard disk for a bit of Cubase fun over the next few months.
Eskimos went on to do some really excellent dance music and they were a jolly nice bunch of chaps too!
Unfortunately I've lost touch with them, but if anyone knows how I can contact any of them - please let me know with a posting here.
Cheers, Doug

Hi everyone Isn't the internet the most bizarre thing??? I was the bass player in eskimos and egypt and was sent this link by a friend saying "you should read this!!!!". Reading this topic from start to finish has been hilarious! and certainly brought back some good memories. Some of you guys should apply for jobs at interpol! how the hell you eventually worked out what this track was and where it came from is amazing!!!!! It is indeed from our first release on village records (thanks doug Bouit!) and is actually a double A side as we couldn't decide which was the best song!. This release kick started our career (thanks again doug) We soon became to be managed by a German guy from Hanover (Eric Harle) who had moved to Manchester, and then went on to also manage Moby, sparks, Sonique and Royksopp. We released an album called 'Perfect Disease' on 'One Little Indian' records in london and then another called 'Kamikaze' on 'Motor Music' in Germany. We also have a fully recorded third

Hi
Just been running a search on Eskimos and Egypt on the internet. In the mid to late I used to hang around with the lead singer of the band Chris. He was very influenced by Balaam and the Angel and Gene Loves Jezebel at the time and used to have several pony tails tied up with red ribbons.
We used to go to the Bansheem the Ritz, The Playpen etc in Manchester...great days
Mike

David (Cameron-Pryde) if you ever read this thread again, can you please confirm that the long lost "Geek" album is actually "Kamikaze" under the new line up as Vietnam Inc.?
I will never forget your live shows and the stack of Akai samplers! ;-)
Looking at the lineup, Paul Cundall left the band around this time (1997) and they probably repackaged the Kamikaze album under a different name. Paul mentioned it hardly sold any copies, which is a damn shame as it was incredible. I would have loved to have heard another album from them though as Kamikaze was awesome!

Yep ta can confirm. After 12 years, I have tracked down a copy of the CD-R release of Geek and yes, its appears to be identical to Kamikaze (CDDB even thinks it is the same CD.)
Damn shame it was never released properly in either guise as it is fantastic. Have often had "Control Freak" and Wonderland" from Kamikaze on the iPod in the last few years. ;-)
If it wasn't for the fab guys at DEF, I would never have had all the later stuff as they very generously sent me a load of promos in 1998...still looking for the Future Music article tho...
Oh well, another band that OLI just didn't "get"...
