Is the new BBS a bust?

Postby LUX-man » Fri Jan 27, 2006 5:29 pm

Geez, is this new BBS format turning people off? Seemed like the old board was a lot more popular. At least for me, the new board is hard to read: the orange contents bar on the left forces me to do a lot of horizontal scrolling. Even so... where is everyone? If you liked the old format and hate the new one, chime in and state your beef.

Yeah, it's kind of quiet in here since the change.

I don't mind the new format, since after I log in, I lose the link tree on the left side and get a brower full of BBS.

I wonder if since people actually have to register that it's keeping the previous frequenters away. Some of them I don't miss so much, but they will remain nameless.

*ding* - well here's my stop, time to get off.....

The old BBS was hugely maintenance-intensive, whereas this one has far more functionality and works virtually hands-off (for me, at least).

If anyone has some ideas for new features content for the site, please speak up!

It may just require some time to achieve critical mass. At least the juvenile noise has been filtered out.

I found this site through the song ID section. Any influx of new users will come from there. With this in mind, I'd like to suggest an improvement to that section: A mark indicating that the song has been successfully identified. Something like a big fat green check mark when you view the list of songs. This way those of use who want to go explore the past to see if we can help identify stuff will know what to skip.

The last website I created was in the early 90s, before web pages could have background images, so I don't know how much work would be involved in that.

\"Identified check\"

Postby admin » Sun Feb 05, 2006 12:14 pm

Excellent idea. I wrote the code this morning to do just that. It's now online.

Now we need people to go through and read them all, and click the \"Identified\" button the bottom of the ones that were identified. There's over a thousand of them, so I kinda don't want to do it by hand myself.... :)

I like the date range selection too.

I've already listened to everything back to 2004, so I'm going to go through 2003 and 2002 and mark them all as I go. After that if no one else has done it I'll do 2004 and 2005.

I didn't think the previous date selection system made it clear that there was more than the past three months online, so I wrote a little selector to let you pick what you want to see. Glad you like it.

The new format is much better (and much more in line with every other forum out there). I'm surprised it's been so quiet since the change personally.

May I suggest a better and more prominent link from the homepage maybe?

There are people who still post in the Archived songs section. How about showing the date of the last messages posted , or something showing that a new message has been posted.

Alot easier than having to go through every song to check for a new post.

:)

Two things...

1. Great about the new link!!! Hopefully it'll help increase the traffic on the forum.

2. In response to orbit-55, you should sign-in to the forum each time you use it and then use the \"mark forum read\" feature in each subforum when you are finished reading each sub-forum. By doing that, all the new posts will be colour-coded next time you sign in and it'll be very easy to figure out what you have and haven't read yet.

Cheers!

Jason Paris :)

Hello Jason, I'm talking about the song id section, not the forum.
