After years of post-'80s Retro Programming there are some songs which I could accept almost never hearing again! Yes these songs are great; 99.9 out of a 100 persons will say, "What Are You, Stupid?".
But I'm talking about big hit songs being grossly overplayed at the expense of seeemingly forgotten songs by the same band (let alone bands which virtually never get played despite re-released CDs - another topic!).

These are: 'Standard' RETRO Songs that unfortunately get played EVERY TIME.

Would anyone care to add to the RETIRED listing:

1) Blue Monday - New Order (there are many other hits)
2) Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics (whatever happened to 'In the Garden')
3) ...

p.s. again these are great songs - but enough already.

Unfortunately, radio is all about playing what people can identify with in the first 10 seconds. A station wants to keep people loyal and listening for 15 minutes or more at a time: "RATINGS". That's why CFNY pre-1988 was so great because it was about "VARIETY". We were extremely lucky to have ever had a radio station here in Toronto that went against the norm. The retired listing would be too long and obvious.

Variety- that reminds me of a slogan from the ads for the "9 to 5 no-repeat workday", which I believe CFNY had to stop using because of threats from Wide World of Sports: "The thrill of variety, not the agony of repeat". If only the stations I have to put up with at work had such a no-repeat policy. As bad as the Edge can be, at least they don't play Shania Twain every 2-3 hours.

As much as I love "Tainted Love" by Soft Cell, I'm sure tired of hearing it on every retro show and on every retro compilation.

I do a retro show on Mohawk College every Sunday night from 9-11 pm. I can't promise everything that we used to listen to one FNY back in the day, but I do play songs that aren't killed by overexposure. C101.5 fm

Jack 92.5, Edge retro Sunday nights, Mix 99.9 retro - all play the same standards which they should retire while there are hundreds of songs which remain buried in vaults.

That will never happen. See second post in this thread as to why. If you want variety for retro 80's go here:
