What ever happened to Radio???

I'm sorry to disagree, but last time I listened to CITR, they were saying that "there are no good bands in Vancouver, everybody sucks" and were giggling at local band names. Not exactly "the spirit". It's a college station- a pretty good one at that, perhaps nore comparable to CKLN than CFNY?

It seems like commercial radio is more concerned with ratings and advertising revenue. Limited playlists, endless commercials and idiotic deejays have "ruined" many radio stations. My sources for music have become satellite radio (XM), the internet (www.flashbackalternatives.com) and CDs.

There's a station in Victoria BC called "The Zone @ 91.3. Pretty good! They have pockets of greatness such as- "Modern Rock In Box" and "Sector 91". The playlist is typical Modern Rock Fare, but they do pick a lical / indie Band Of The Month which they plug relentlessly. I believe they broke Hot Hot Heat this way. Their Can Con choices are typical- Tea Party, Headstones, David Usher et al and do not necessarily reflect the format or Canadian Music well. Pretty darn good station, though- decent morning show and all. LISTEN AT www.thezone.fm ...Maybe taking over smaller markets is doable- after all... remember CFNY was in a little house in BRAMPTON.

Goodbye WLIR NYC. They kicked ass- I bought The Origin on CD because of that station. I still have it.

anyone who listened to WBUF93 circa 1973-1976, who intruduced the likes of Genesis, Gentle Giant, Be-bop Deluxe, Strawbs, City Boy etc. to this area,
And the very early days of CFNY in'77-78 with David Pritchard, Reiner Schwartz and Dave Marsden, who introduced EVERYTHING that was any good in the early 80's to this area, really knows just how bad it is.

I remember WBUF93 back then. It was my first introduction to music outside of the standard top 40 fare of the day and influenced my musical interests to this day.
I remember hearing FZ interviewed on CHUM FM when he was in town promoting the Zoot Allures lp. "Disco Boy" was on their play list at the time, believe it or not. He asked the interviewer why "The Torture Never Stops" was marked DNA (Do Not Air) and needless to say he wasn't overly impressed with the answer. I just wish I could remember just what the reply was! 'NY, on the other hand, played that track regularly for a time. Ah, the good old days...

Looks like a radio revolution is happening. KNDD Seattle (www.1077theend.com) is hiring local indie musicians (Rob Femur from the Femurs overnight Sat. night / Sunday AMs) to do on air work. Rob's show reminds me of an old CFNY overnight shift. Even airplay and a shameless plug for his own band! btw- this IS commercial radio. Also, KNRK Portland, OR dropped the NEW ROCK ALTERNATIVE formula and are asking listeners what they want- eg: Local jocks, indie artists, jocks picking tunes, b-sides, live cuts, more music- less talk. I'll be in Portland soon, so I'll report back. www.knrk.com in the meantime. Sorry, it's not happening in Canada. Radio is a disgrace here. Embarassing, to say the least. We sure were spoiled with great and quirky radio like CFNY back then.
