Spirit of Radio BBS

This whole CFNY reunion made me realize how great 'The Spirit of Radio' was. Now we have to put up with repetitive corprate crap from everywhere. I don't think we will ever see another station like this again. It's really too bad that the world has become so carefully calculated and people (for the most part) are particpating drones.

It is really unbelievable how carefully crafted radio has become. It is sad the creativity and mind expansion is becoming obsolete.

How carefully crafted radio has become?!? It's not even crafted anymore. It's all about the shareholders... listeners be damned. Radio today is in trouble. There are stations, in major markets that are voice tracking midday shifts. If radio is supposed to be a constant companion, one that is informative, entertaining and local... how does a jock do that hours or days in advance? The same problem occurs with satellite programming. If radio's "braintrust" doesn't go back to live programming with entertaining hosts and take some chances every now and then with the music then Internet radio and satellite radio will really be a viable choice for most listeners. Music research and focus group testing has it's place, but so does hiring talented people who can rely on their intuition and experience. There must be a balance between the "science" of radio programming and the "art" of programming. The shareholders will still be happy AND more importantly... so will the listeners.

..can't wait for the Sisters of Mercy release "Screw Shareholder Value". I heard that's what they called their new album which did not get released.

Screw Shareholder Value was a piece of crap that Eldritch gave to his record company to complete a multi-album deal.

It was 'released' to the internet many years ago for free (mid to late 90's?), but now some people are packaging it up and trying to make a buck on people's ignorance that this is in some way a Sisters of Mercy release.

At least the Sisterhood EP he released in the mid 80's (to stop what eventually became the Mission from releasing material under that name) had some redeeming value - Screw Shareholder Value does not, it is really to piss the record company off more than anything.

Real Radio does not exist....ANYWHERE!!!

I'll tell you what happened to radio....just like everything else in the world....it's the masons.

To me, the fate of CFNY mirrors what has happened to the whole radio business. I found it first in the mid-80s when I visited and couldn't get enough - tapes getting sent to Germany where I lived so I could hear Chris Sheppard and his wildness.

Now Toronto is another one of the cities I visit and turn the radio off. Very, very sad.

The only station which I feel even comes close to the spirit is WBER out of Rochester, NY, which you can listen to on the web site at wber.monroe.edu - it's not quite as eclectic as CFNY was, but at least it's fiercly independant.

Where is the spirit to take risks and do seomthing like this in this horrific age of corporate-owned TV and radio?

Radio sucks, play cds, listen to music on the puter, you will find more music that way.

Just got back from Vancouver. If anyone goes there, 101.9!!! Friggin wicked station. UBC's station, but sheesh! It is truly today's "spirit"

Subject: Radio changing Direction?
For the past 12 years, KNDD Seattle (107.7 The END) (www.1077theend.com) has been a crucial part of the scene in NW Washington and Southern BC. They're the station where I first heard Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit (COAST 1040 "the spirit of radio" was the first in Canada), Soundgarden, L7, Crystal Method, etc...

Over the past few years they have been identical to Vancouver's consultant-heavy 104.9 XFM. XFM failed and The End faltered. After a dismal ratings period, 107.7 THE END did something that caught my ear- loosened up the format! Jocks have say into what they play, listeners are encouraged to call PD Phil Manning and New Artists are being played frequently. I have been turned on to The Postal Service, Modest Mouse, Morrissey (again), The Killers, IMA Robot, and Muse recently while being smacked in the head with the likes of The Jim Carroll Band, Sex Pistols, The Smiths, the Cure and other "CFNY Classics". I heard the Dead Kennedys at 6AM the other week. They even play live sessions during drive time.and changed their slogan to "It's About The Music". Thank Cripes the Americans have figured it out and that We British Columbians (especially ex-CFNY'ers) can get this fine station on cable FM at 107.5 ...oh yeah, they take requests too!!!
