Excellent source for news on artists from the 80's covering what is being released by them new and from their back catalogue. Be sure to go to Music in the Menu and click on News - JP Feed. Also check out an awesome retro webcaster: Flashback Alternatives at Live 365.com to get the same experience as you had when you listened to The Spirit Of Radio pre-1988.

WOXY.com is the closest to old CFNY on this continent. BBC Radio 1, 2 and 6Music all have great Spirit-like programming as well ... (24/7 in the case of 6Music)

XM satellite radio's "Fred", Ch 44. Only available to those of us in the US (although signal reaches all of North America). Lots of variety, gets obscure occasionally, requests welcomed, and often played within one or two songs!

BBC 6 Music is my favourite station these days, although I agree XFM is also very good. 6 Music really mix it up though. They play lots of old stuff that really reminds me of CFNY in its greatest days. But there's lots of really new material and bands too. Good BBC archive sessions too.

Looks like a radio revolution is happening. KNDD Seattle (www.1077theend.com) is hiring local indie musicians (Rob Femur from the Femurs overnight Sat. night / Sunday AMs) to do on air work. Rob's show reminds me of an old CFNY overnight shift. Even airplay and a shameless plug for his own band! btw- this IS commercial radio. Also, KNRK Portland, OR dropped the NEW ROCK ALTERNATIVE formula and are asking listeners what they want- eg: Local jocks, indie artists, jocks picking tunes, b-sides, live cuts, more music- less talk. I'll be in Portland soon, so I'll report back. www.knrk.com in the meantime. Sorry, it's not happening in Canada. Radio is a disgrace here. Embarassing, to say the least. We sure were spoiled with great and quirky radio like CFNY back then.

No argument with KEXP. Seattle has the best radio in North America! John Richards is on KEXP and 107.7 The End (host of The Young & The Restless - indie show). It's just that 107.7 The End (cable FM 107.5 in Vancouver) is what CFNY would have possibly evolved into if they kept on in the right direction (and wasn't a Corus station). I'm fortunate enough to get 107.7 in my car in Vancouver. I listen to that, sometimes the [email protected] Victoria, and Scot Turner's Beat 94.5 (the only Vancouver station programmed on my dial) Even though it's Urban, it has its tasty moments fo' shizzle.

Dave, does 107.7 have a webcast? I can't find one on the webpage...but yeah, it looks to be at least a decent commercial alternative station.
