This sure sounds like Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet to me. What brought that to mind is that I either heard this song or something very similar used as a bumper on Kids in the Hall.
I'm thinking maybe something pre-Savvy Show Stoppers. One of their indie cassettes perhaps.
