new order are playing a warm up gig in Liverpool tired to get tickets (its at a small new club in town) but they sold out in 2 mins i'll check out the NME site.

c-d with it (well in the uk ) called "why don't we do it in the road" there's 24 beatles covers on it and quess what?

I inherited CFNY from my big brothers. While other pre-teen girls were swooning over Terence Trent Darby crap, I was exploring the Alternative universe.
My brother was very involve in the CRTC campainge many moons ago. I have forwarded him this site.
I still have a couple of the promo cassettes from HMV, but they are starting to ware out.
I stopped listing a few yrs ago, it got very repetative and there was alot of heavey tecnoy stuff. I went over to the MIX. There was enough good to make the really bad bareable. I came back for 2 reasons- Carla Collins, and Sugar Jones.
The only problem is none of the teens I work with know what CFNY is. Seems they all listen to 102.1.
Never miss Alan on Sundays, but with the new Degrassi starting, I might have to catch the show on Monday nights!

George Goode, the song "Call Me" was by Go West. "I Am the Night" was performed by Vis a Vis. I remember "Masters and Moderns" and "The Hight of Jazz."
Thank you for putting up this site! It brings back many good memories. I started listening to CFNY in 1985 when I heard a radio station that my co-worker was listening to in the parking lot. This music was so unique and a refreshing change from "Top 40" and classic rock. When my co-worker came back from his break, I complimented him on his taste of music and I asked him what station that was. He replied "CFNY."
I couldn't wait to go home and listen to more tunes that I was quickly playing in my head afterward. I believe the first song I heard was the Box's "Say to Me." My radio was fixed to "The Spirit of Radio" from 1985 until I stopped listening to it around 1992 when the format was too commercial. Even though Earl Jive, Beverly Hills and Don Berns came back for a bit after the exodus in 1986, I guess the saying is true "you can't go home again" as the spirit in the Spirit of Radio had died.
My best memories of the Spirit of Radio:
The non-revenue commercials.
Visiting the Scollard St. location and I was given memorabilia like bumper stickers and Lockey Jockeys. I even chatted with JR or James Scott, very down to earth people.
When CFNY was broadcasting from the CN Tower one evening a week in the mid-80's. The only time I went there in 1985 or 1986, I saw my favourite DJ, Live Earl Jive, spinning alternative tunes and announcing on-air on the other side of a window .. the guy sure was entertaining and humorous! He played a EP version of Danse Society's "Heaven Is Waiting" which will always remind me of my visit to that alternate studio high above Toronto.

Great site. Thanks for the memories. CFNY was one of the things I missed about leaving the GTA. I still have fond memories of the day-long mega-concert they sponsored in some farmers field in Mr. And Missisauga. :-)

This site is an oasis for me! I'm so happy I found it! I learned so much about music form CFNY in the late 70s and 80s. The whole concept of listening to a wonderful variety of music is lost today. We had the chance to listen to stuff and decide for ourselves whether we liked it or not. We also had the patience to stay with the station when something less than perfect was played. I feel for the kids that have never heard a song that doesn't have a $500,000 video.

Hi. My name is Richard. I fell over this great site while looking for an MP3 of Yazz (The Only Way Is Up) and now I'm kicking myself for not finding it sooner!! I'd like to thank everyone for keeping the spirit of 80's electro alive. I have a duo called remix (http://www.remix-info.com/) we specialise in 80's electro pop (apparently just the same playlist as CFNY) and so I constantly search for MP3's of deleted 80's electro. I personally was heavily involved in the 80's electro pop scene playing in Marc Almonds band - The Willing Sinners for four years, sessioning for Arkane, Zeke Manyika and early AHA (!) I feel like I've come home finding this site, cheers. BTW - anyone have the Yazz Mp3? I'm dying for it, it has to be in my set for Xmas!!

He got black lung & he still smokes miner cigarettes,.... I'm sure I've got that somewhere on a tape.

Just a passing observation.... the 'My Old Man' track you referred to was by Nobby Clegg and the Civilians... I don't know if it ever made it to vinyl, likely was just played as a demo tape they had at the station.... it's a great tune and I'm glad I kept a copy of it.
