XM Satelite Radio Channel #44 "FRED" -- many old CFNY 80's s

FYI for all of you 80's CFNY listeners. I realize that XM satelite radio is about to move to Canada and thought you'd like to know that many of the songs you knew and loved on CFNY are played 24 hr's commercial free on XM Channel 44 "Fred". The only thing missing is some of the Canadian content.

XMFan.com has a search utility for you to check what artists/songs have been played.

Canadian content is very, very limited on Fred. Have only heard the following songs played:

Baby Ran - 54-40
Echo Beach - Martha and the Muffins
Eyes of a Stranger - The Payolas
I'm an Adult Now - The Pursuit of Happiness

Flat6s, I had concerns between XM & Sirius regarding "Classic Alternative". 1st Wave on Sirius has a smaller library than Fred and tends to repeat more often. Since both services will be introduced north of the border, I assume Canadian Content will be in place. Regardless of what system people use, it's nice to know that there's a platform available for 80's listeners of CFNY.

I kinda wonder about the whole satellite movement... If you're just in it for the music, why not just listen to your own CDs?

For me, a radio station's also about local news and I find that I even enjoy the banter between the on-air personalities.

I'm personally more intrigued by Sirius than XM. For one thing, Sirius is going to have a CBC Radio Three channel, which is something I've been wishing for since, like, forever. (If you've never checked out the CBC Radio Three website, it's fantastic. Probably the closest webradio's ever gotten to capturing the old-CFNY spirit without pretending music ended in 1989.)

Capturing the old CFNY spirit, for me, isn't about a radio station doing 24-hour alt-retro; that has its place, but it would get boring real quick if it were all a station did. I want a radio station to be adventurous in introducing me to new music I haven't heard yet. Sure, throw a few old favourites in the mix, too, but gimme my Arcade Fire!

Have a listen to Marsden at 94.9 The Rock or on pulverradio.com, he is doing exactly that (i.e. not all 'retro'). Start off with a good dose of late70's and 80's CFNY era stuff, throw in some very cool 60's and early 70's, add a dose of some gems from the 90's and sprinkle some very recent stuff on top, including premieres of some new releases and you have much of the music played on the David Marsden Radio Program. Throw in David's interesting banter and general weirdness and it truly does all mix into what is truly the 'spirit of radio' in my books.

Come and take a seat in the Marsden theatre :-)

It's just too bad that he hasn't taken on more than just his own show at 94.9 - the station for the most part blows when he's not on the air.

It would be nice to be able to tune into something so cool at any time of the day. With more personalities and airtime involved with the same principles, the breadth could only get wider.

As some of you here may know, I have a vested interest in satellite radio, having started TimeTrax - http://www.timetraxtech.com

That said, I have have been listening to both Fred on XM and First Wave on Sirius for over a year, and without a doubt I have to say that Fred has far superior programming. Richard Blade on Sirius gets quite annoying after a while, and the personalities on Fred (when there are any) are far more knowledgeable and subtle. The variety of music on Fred is far greater as well.
