I've been listening to and enjoying Flashback Alternatives for the past two days. Very reminiscent of CFNY. And I thought that FRED on XM Radio was good. Flashback Alternatives is ten times better!

Yes it has good songs, and nice to listen to once in a while. I fully support it. But in the end, wasn't listening to CFNY all about hearing new stuff and not listening to the same stuff over and over and over...

I used miss CFNY terribly. Then Gore invented the internet and a whole new world has opened up to us. So sorry Lee Carter I don't need you any more. I can listen to Virgin Radio directly. There are feeds from Japan and the Middle East and Peru etc. (bit disappointing when they play Beyonce). I also subscribe to MusicMatch Jukebox where I can type in a random name and listen to their songs when I want.*

So what's my point? Flashback Alternatives is lovely and great and I support it and have listened to it BUT it is not an alternative to CFNY because CFNY was not about nostalgia. It was about playing songs that no one else would play. It was about playing new stuff and stuff that was big in England but didn't get played here. It was about helping indie bands. It played Blues and Classical and Quebecois music.

I guess what I miss most about CFNY was that it was so damned convenient. Now I have to work for my new music fix.

*Well not all artists - I just requested the Yobs and they did not have any tracks, but had a complete discography - very cool. But they do have Level 42 and the Extras, Martha and the Muffins, Blue Peter etc.

Thank goodness for FA, and it is just as good as CFNY ever was, and without the annoying (some of them) DJ's. It is every bit as esoteric, and plays TONS of Can-Con (due to a huge Toronto-based listenership, I highly suspect). D.J. Ed is easily reached and always receptive to hearing about important omissions to be added to FA. I live near him now (Phila./Central NJ). There are even some Canadian DJ'd weekly shows. FA IS the scion of Classic CFNY as far as I'm concerned.

Knocking FA for playing a lot of old music is insane. What else am I supposed to do? Listen to Rap? Please. I'm thrilled to have a station that plays the stuff I love (and never stopped loving), and which is constantly reminding me about songs I used to love on CFNY but haven't heard in 20 years at least (e.g. just today, I heard Benjamin Russell's "Miracle").

Yes, OCCASIONALLY there are inexcusable gaps in their database, but my god, what they DO have, plus they're always adding more.

To my knowledge there is no other station on the internet that even remotely touches FA for CFNY-esque music. FRED was "ok", but no where near on the level of FA, and of course now that in Sirius' idiocy they've replaced FRED with the horribly predictable and generic First Wave, I am going to cancel my XM account. In fact, I already tried to once, but they practically gave it to me free for another 6 months.

FA on my stand alone internet radios (NOTE: with these, there is no "work" to tune in. It's a preset on my radio, unless pressing "on" is your definition of work), most of CFNY on my iPhone (i.e. my music collection), and even FA on my iPhone in the car via Shoutcast, makes for a great experience and NO SATELLITE RADIO required.
