Spirit of Radio Sunday Launches on 102.1 the Edge
Weekly feature airs Sundays 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning March 9, 2014
(February 24, 2014 – Toronto, Canada) Corus Entertainment’s 102.1 the Edge (CFNY-FM) is bringing back the music that changed the face of radio in the late ‘70s and ‘80s with a weekly special celebrating The Spirit of Radio. Beginning March 9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Spirit of Radio Sunday will feature the artists that defined the alternative rock format including U2, Police, Depeche Mode, New Order, Talking Heads, The Clash, The Sex Pistols, OMD, The Smiths, The Cure and Tears for Fears, and will be hosted by Scot Turner.
“Spirit of Radio Sunday will celebrate CFNY’s legacy as the only station that showcased emerging artists during the rise of new wave, punk and alternative music,” said Blair Bartrem, Brand Director, 102.1 the Edge. “We are thrilled to have former on-air personality Scot Turner host the show, taking our listeners back to CFNY’s roots.”
Turner was a DJ on CFNY from 1984 to 1992 where he created and hosted/co-hosted various feature shows including Live In Toronto and The Thursday Thirty.
CFNY became one of the most pioneering and influential radio stations in the world that explored new music and allowed freedom of expression, individuality and music choice of its DJs.
Spirit of the Radio Sunday can be heard every Sunday beginning March 9 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please visit edge.ca.

The first show was great. I'm very excited about this and I hope some wonderful things come out of it.
Re: Scot Turner's Spirit of Radio Sundays on The Edge
The first show was so so. The only real somewhat surprise was airing the 102.1 Band. I hope Scot is allowed to dig a lot deeper. What made the station truly unique prior to 1988 was playing obscure artists. What we heard in the first show was the safe choices. Airing 2 songs each from 2 Can Con artists is a little disturbing since the show is only 6 hours in length. There is so much music to draw from it should be relatively easy to keep Can Con artists to 1 song per show. Let's hope this doesn't turn into a recycling of the same more well known artists without going much deeper.

I listened to the 2nd show for an hour yesterday and had to bail. Scot mentioned he was going to be airing a song from U2 every hour with it being the day before St. Patrick's as well as more than one Sinead track. Corus ( Bore Us ) must be pulling his strings as I find this lack of effort insulting. I monitored what aired at their site the last 5 hours which was predictable. Unless things change soon this will continue to be a very watered down version of what The Spirit really was all about. Instead of making an effort of playing Irish bands / artists like The Adventures, Cactus World News, The Fountainhead, Microdisney, Silent Running, Pierce Turner etc... which would represent The True Spirit of Radio we get U2 chucked in every hour zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. You are much better off listening weekends in the evening to David Marsden and the rest of the week to Flashback Alternatives for a true representation of The Spirit and not the current debacle at The Edge ( of a cliff ).

I don't even bother to tune in anymore. Same old stuff over and over and over again.

Cancelled after 11 months. Apparently it was their highest rated show yet wasn't getting high enough numbers among their core target listeners aged 18 to 34. Did they think 11 months ago that age group were going to tune in in droves? There are no doubt those in that age group interested in what their parents / much older brothers and sisters listened to when they were growing up but it's rather naive to think a show geared towards those in their early 40's to early 60's would realize a huge following among another generation. I had an issue with the time frame Scot was using as it expanded to 1992. 1987 was truly the last solid year for The Spirit and the initial shows were not going very deep considering how much quality music was released during the true Spirit Of Radio days 1978 - 1987 that still sounds fresh and not dated. I hadn't looked to see what was being programmed in recent months but doubt much changed as far as going deep. It's too bad an Adult Alternative format isn't available here in Toronto on terrestrial radio as I'm sure it could succeed with a target audience of 35 to 64.

I wish some radio station would bring this back. I know Marsden has his NY The Spirit.com and Flashback Alternatives is great - but I have always been a fan of radio. This was the highest rated show on The Edge. That means there is a audience for it.

From what I have learned since the demise of the show Scot regrets not having a bigger library of music to draw from. Too bad he didn't reach out to listeners / those who frequent sites like this to help with that.
Between a handful of knowledgeable people with massive collections broadcast quality sources would have been plentiful and the shows would have been more fascinating to listen to.

Strange that there would be a small library of tunes. Mr Alan Cross would probably have just about everything they would probably need. I miss the show all the same.
