Restaurants of the 70-80s in TO
Actually, I should have added this to my post: the places aren't all necessarily CFNY-related, they were just bars/clubs/eating places I went to often in the 70s/80s that don't exist anymore.

Surprised that no one mentioned "Bemelmans" (Bloor Street West, south side, just south of Yorkville) - it was the best place to go before or after the Bloor Street Diner.
And for really late night dining and urban theatre, "People's Foods" at Dupont and St. George - cheesy decor, burgers & fries, and the whole variety of Toronto life. It's still there.

What no mention of "The Headspace" at "Larry's Hideaway"..
"the Turning Point" on Bloor st.. with Frank and Lil booking the bands..
I still miss "the Silver Crown" most of all; Tim and Lou knew how to throw a really good party week after week.

I remember Just Desserts at Bedford & Davenport, occasionally winding up there after midnight (closing time at UofT's Robarts Library, back in the day).
I also remember the weaker, would-be doppelganger location on John St., south of Richmond. Not even close to the same ambiance.
Two eateries that I still miss:
1) Saigon Maxima -- on Dundas, just west of Beverley; one of the first Vietnamese restaurant to gather a \"mainstream\" (i.e. non-Vietnamese) clientele, IIRC
2) Foodworks -- Bloor, just east of Bathurst; I enjoyed many a breakfast here, particularly the Greek omelette, washed down with lots and lots of coffee
Ah, memories.... *sigh*

I'm surprised nobody remembers the Piccadilly Tube, demolished to make way for the Atrium at Bay and roughly where the Pickle Barrel is now located. Done up like a London tube station complete with curved walls.
They had coupons in the UofT student handbook which I used to buy a hamburger combo prior to my trek to the record stores on Yonge Street.
Perhaps better known for the live bands that played there than a restaurant.

hahah Fran's was crap but it was always fun to see John Candy in the window at the Yonge and StClair location. I think there is an Irish pub there now ....
One of my favs was Tobi's .. well it was until I found a dead roach in the french onion soup .... puke !! never went there again..... from what I know there is still one at yonge and bloor ...the rest just vanished...
man this site really brings back memories.....sigh

It's true what they say - a restaurant is only as good as the last meal you had there. It looks like we are losing the Toby's at Yonge and Bloor to a condo development. There was one in the underground - First Canadian Place or somewhere connected. I don't know if that one is still there or not but it was basically there for the crowd that worked in the complex and they went home when everyone in the towers went home.

I used to go to Krush every Friday night. My friend and I were never asked for their Krush card (which never existed). We'd drive in from Ajax because it was the coolest bar around with the coolest music!
