When exactly did CFNY turn into the EDGE?
... and 103.3 is dropping the Edge name ... it's yesterday's trend in general. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised (though have no inside info) if the name "CFNY" is revived this year.
When exactly did CFNY turn into the EDGE?
YES the EDGE IS a format ---- as Q, MIX, MOJO, JACK etc all are!
all controlled by media conglomerates using formats conceived through extensive focus groups and testing. they are just giving the listeners what they think they want to maximize advertising revenue.

and what about their legal threat to power broadcasting's edge (now known as the Rock) in Oshawa? i could have sworn the oshawa folks had it first yet failed to copywrite? didn't they switch from :the leading edge" to the "edge" when oshawa changed their name to magic? so many questions....
When exactly did CFNY turn into the EDGE?
well we've all heard that expression"if it's not broke ,don't fix it!" well they fixed it and probly alot of spirit listeners left as well.to me ,music is just as good as MY OPINION of it.you don't mater! behind every sucessful buisenes is the almighty dollar.they are only vunerable if the masses turn them away.a good canadian is told what to do!i doubt if the spirit would be brought back as a large following like q107 classic rock, certainly on a competative level.$$$$$we were just apart of the times when cfny broke new ground and it's time has suited the purpose!i'm glad to have been a small part of it.radio ain't my chum

I been listening to 102.1 for years, then edge102 and then back to 102.1 the Edge again.
I wonder if they went to edge102 for that while 103.3 the edge kinda copied their name, and format. etc.
Although don't expect to hear much Canadian rock on 103.3 like Billy Talent, I Mother Earth, Finger 11, The Tea Party, Thornley, etc.
Now they are Rock Radio 103.3 the Edge, playing more "Fox" music like Guns n Roses, Ac Dc, Megadeth and Motley Crue.
I wish 102.1 the Edge was a bit heavier though, like more Godsmack, Disturbed, Sevendust, Korn.
Very rare you ehar those bands during the day, you need to wait till Friday night @ The Kingdom, or Saturday night @ The Phoenix.
I still think 102.1 the Edge is still the best station in Toronto. And better than 97.7 htz fm.
But they are getting bad for repeats lately.

When exactly did CFNY turn into the EDGE?
Well said edge69, I been listening to 102.1 as well a long time, and I could not agree with you more, although they do play alot of soft rock, they should perhaps call them selves "mellow rock, 102.1 the Edge?
When exactly did CFNY turn into the EDGE?
The station these days is still pretty tough to listen to when compared to what it once was in the early and mid 1980's.
When exactly did CFNY turn into the EDGE?
Around the time when i stopped listening. I was in university, maybe 1992-1993, when I called in a request for Uzeb and they wouldn't play it.
Yes, right now it sounds an awful lot like Q107, minus the Sweet Home Alabama.

i only bother with the sunday night retro show - and even half the time their selections on there are questionable.

Until I found this website (via a Google search last week or so) I knew nothing about the change, but it does explain why they sounded so crappy when I was driving through the TO listening area on my way to Newfoundland to go to university back in 2000---they sounded just like every station to which I turned the dial (yeah, old car). How disappointing. I popped my tape back in.
I moved to northern ON in 1990, but had stopped listening to any radio station (liked Psychedelic Sundays on Q107---the only time that I was *not* listening to CFNY) in early 1988 because I was never in one place long enough to become "attached" (long-haul truck driving to the US). I'm glad I've missed it all, by the looks of it, though.
I still don't listen to any radio (or watch TV or anything like that). I have many CDs and I listen to them. . . . but, of course, the collection is not complete. There are still Song IDs from CFNY that have yet to be ID'd. And *that*, has been posted elsewhere.
