Toronto 80's photographs - New music scene

Post by Michelle »

Does anyone know of any other sites on the net that cover the history of the new music scene in Toronto - late 70's and early 80's? I am looking for photographs from the era - Bruce Lam was a big photographer at all the bands shows, clubs (voodoo, katrina's, nuts and bolts etc...) I cannot find anything on him on the net. Any other links you know of would be great.

Check out www.jimib.com I believe there is a collection of photographs by Deborah Samuel, John Rowlands and others. I do know that Bruce had worked with this artist and I would love to have some of his photos as well. Hope this helps.JG

Yes - Bruce was really active during the early 80's doing photography of "blitz kids" etc..at Club Voo Doo, Igwana Lounge - he published some of his images in the Toronto Magazine called "Profile" which was launched in 1984 - right around the time the bar "Century 66" opened on Yonge Street. How great would it be to have a collection like that showing in a gallery or even just available to look at. He did a lot of band photograhy too - I met him when attending Simple Minds with a friend - back in '84! Thanks for the link and if anyone else out there has any info let me know!

Peter Noble took a lot of pictures as well. I remember he published a book but I don't recall the title.

I'm having a photo exhibition in Vancouver and Toronto [Rivoli in October] of bands I shot in Toronto from 88-93. A little after the time you're looking for but I recall shooting beside Bruce many times. Check out my website for some local pics: http://www.derekvonessen.ca/

There's info on there about the show.

Im looking for a photo of my husband and his good friend at the time .

It was taken before a "Bad Manners" concert in the early 80's, by a photographer friend Mike DuBrule.

My husband Gary ( Gaz ) Hollett, and his friend Chris Piggen's are posing side by side , looking very 80's . Gaz has his skinhead look , and Chris has a 3 way Mohawk, with bondage pants .. etc.

I have heard many times about this photo, and it was quite a popular photo during its day. It even appeared on the cover of a McLean's magazine !

If anyone can direct me to any information ( website, book, magazine .. ) I would greatly appreciate it .

Thanks,
Donna Hollett

If it appeared on the cover of Macleans, why don't you just go to the library and scan the Macleans magazines from the 80's?

Wow - I just started doin a search for Bruce Lam myself. He shot a ton of photos of my band in the 80s. We were called BAD. Played the Toronto scene - even played the Voddo club.
