What Next? Records in downtown Brampton

Did anyone ever shop there? I used to find excellent music in this store and got a world of great advice from Grant, the owner. I bought a lot of rare and precious material at What Next? and recall being so sad to see it close. I have always wondered what happened to Grant. Do any of you know him or remember him? Would love to get in touch with him again.

Yes, I spent some good coin at What Next. There and New World Records up the street. I remember being there one day and Lee Aaron happened by, she sure didnt look like a Metal Queen at the time, I didn't recognize her but Grant sure did. Bet you couldnt find a Lee Aaron record in that place!

New World Records!! Thanks for mentioning that shop, Kev. I couldn't remember the name of it. It was almost as good as What Next?, but you just couldn't beat Grant's friendly demeanour and helpful service.

Lee Aaron - that's funny. She actually went to my high school, Central Peel on Kennedy Road. Yeah, I don't imagine What Next? or New World would've been stocking too much of her material. ;)

Grant was AMAZING & I've often wondered what happened to him as well. Never knew his last name. The name of the owner of New World was "Terry Walma". Not sure if he still lives in Brampton but, I used to babysit kids that played with his 2 boys. His sons were fine, wife was really nice but, Terry was VERY strange, grumpy & basically a "music snob" to the extreme!!! But, he DID know his stuff & had LOTS of great music in that store. I still always preferred Grant though. Was at Terry Walma's house once for a Christmas open house he & his wife had going on & he basically ignored everyone & locked himself in one room the whole time. Go figure. Man, I sure do miss What Next though. What a great little spot! Sigh. Those were "the days".

Thinking back, I prefered New World having spent much more time (and $$) there. It was around before and I believe after What Next. Tonnes to rummage through, it was the next best thing to heading downtown T.O. They always had newer, but deleted stuff(the ones with the holes on the corner)on the display racks at 'very reasonable prices'. Plus he always had little comments on the sleeves about the record. Must have spoken to him in front of the register hundreds of times but he never really had much to say. Always thought if he gained a little weight and put rubber bands in his beard he'd look like Junkyard Dog from WWF but thats besides the point! He sure knew his music! His comments convinced me to buy a Poi Dog Pondering album which I in turn seeked out anything else by them as they were great. They had 1 song which made limited airplay on cfny; \"Living In The Dreaming Body\". Great Accoustic sound with great voice harmony.

Anyway, speaking of downtown shops, Vortex, Rotate This, of course Vinyl Museum and there is some other little place on Queen West that begins with an M I can't think of...

I am glad to see people talking about my two all time fave record shops, I spent hours and days in both between 1986 - Till they both closed.I wish I knew where Grant was so I could thank him for my love of vinyl and some of my career choices.Someone asked about Terry of New World he has an online shop which deals on EBay called Sound City he carries vinyl still as well which is a bonus !
Grant's last name was Ingram I pass by the first What Next Records on McMurchy sometimes and
Think about Grant and the shop.The newer location is now an Ice Cream shop at least they didn't tear it down.

Forgot to mention Gordon Shawcross who used to work at New World Records has a music instrument and music shop inOrangeville.

I discovered 'New World Records' probably in '83 or '84 when it was on George St. and still called 'Vinyl City'. I think I still have a 'vinyl city buck' somewhere.

Grant's store. Not the same selection but definitely a more friendly environment. I got to know him a bit and then he gave me some money when I took a trip to the UK to buy him some cool ''imports'' for the store. Apparently, it was cheaper for me at the time to get the stuff retail over there than it was for him to pick it up wholesale, as an import over here.

So I came back with some Cure and Cocteau picture discs, a few Cure and Buahaus 12''s and others along the same line.

Good stuff. Miss those days. It was a real drag when the Brampton market for that kind of stuff dried up and they had to shut down.

Oh yeah. I went to school with Gord Shawcross. His hair was short in those days. Hee Haw,
