Glen, I ordered the recent cd release of Thomas Leer's "Scale of Ten" which includes the song, "Heartbeat", and I discovered that that is so totally not the song I was talking about. Thank you for introducing me to an artist I wasn't aware of, the album is great, but I guess I'm still looking for that mystery song.

Sorry about not being able to answer your query as you are still looking for the name of the mystery song. Pet Shop Boys played a song which I believe is called "Heart" which has repetitions of "heartbeat" during the song. I doubt that is the song you are looking for because the beat of that song is not that slow.

I ought to get the Thomas Leer CD too as there are a number of songs I like on it including "International" and "Heartbeat."

I know "Heart" by the Pet Shop Boys well. I was a big fan in high school (still am). Good song.

I'm starting to think I dreamed the mystery song. I got rid of my old cassettes years ago (what can I say? I was young, I was stupid), which was a ginormous mistake. If I still had the tape, maybe I could describe the song better! I remember how the main melody went. Maybe I should record myself singing it and post that!

The song you want is "Heartbeat by David Sylvian ex of Japan.
I'm not sure what album it's off of, but that is definitely the song.

It's one of my favorite songs and by the way you describe it, I knew right away that was it.

Heartbeat is from an album of the same name that Sylvian did with Ryuichi Sakamoto and it also appears on Sylvian's compilation Everything and Nothing.

IT HAS BEEN FOUND! After fifteen years of having no idea who the artist was, I finally know! I went to Amazon and checked the audio clip and there it was! Thank you, thank you!
