I've been itching to know for some time now why Kim Hughes departed from CFNY. Anyone know what the circumstances were and where she is today? My girlfriend and I really loved her voice and her on-air wit and humour.
Since I'm already speaking of Live In Toronto, does the station record the live "unplugged" style songs performed by visiting artists? I've heard some great music over the years on this program and I wondered if CFNY ever did like KROK used to do and press an album taken from the year's best in-studio performances.

Kim Hughes we fired and replaced by George Stroumbolopolous several years back.
I remember an article in The Star at the time. The format of Live in Toronto was changed, and the first hour became primarily music because it was still a "drive time" show, and that's what listeners want to here.
The Edge was also looking for a "younger" and different sound. George definitely brought that but, I agree that Kim was great. She wrote for NOW magazine for many years after, but I think she's gone from there now.
In answer to your other question, the station does record all their in-house musical performances. I remember Alan Cross answering that question on-air once. But they don't put them together on a CD because of copyright and recording fees issues which, I imagine, are quite complicated. They have had some great live acts in there over the years though.

Kim was probably also canned because she knew big words, like marmalade, and Simulator. Why Streak is still on the air is probably because he can't add or complete a thought.

Kim Hughes left Toronto to pursue a career in the dot.com world in Seattle.

Kim Hughes now works at the Toronto Star, primarily on the online side of things.

I miss Kim Hughes and Live In Toronto. I wish they would do that now instead of Bookie's College of Musical Knowledge and that sort of crap. I loved sitting on the streetcar on my way home from work or school, with my walkman on, listening to the artist interviews and what was going on at the Horseshoe that night.

Unfortunately....the people in radio think we are all stupid and just program repetitive crap all day. Bookie is really the only hilight in an otherwise dull and glorified top 40 station.
