Dearest Eva,

Thank you for telling me to take an english course. Enlightening, I'm sure. Tell me please, didn't the computer spell check, or grammar check tell you that three(3)periods is what was required for what you wanted to say...not four (4)?

Japetto,

Shouldn't you be handing out stickers to listeners or pushing buttons instead of coming on here?

Alan Cross is still pretty good at what he does. He's just being constrained by today's radio standards. Which, by the way....SUCK!!!!

Re-posts from another messageboard:

HIPSTER:
Modern Rock's problem is not that it's too hip for the room. It's problem is that it's not hip enough for the room. There's nothing modern, or alternative, or hip about Nickelback. There are a lot more putative Alternative listeners who are turned off by Nickelback than would be turned off by the Shins or Flaming Lips or Wilco or Stars or Thievery Corporation or Phish or Belle and Sebastian or any number of other often big-selling bands who can't get a second of airplay on the commercial stations.

DEAD102:
You hit the nail right on the head. CFNY used to introduce new acts to North America, and other stations would look to 'NY and model their playlists accordingly. The edge waits 'til someone else has broken it, or until one of the majors is pushing it before making an add.
The Arcade Fire is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the pathetic Can-con situation. Instead of playing something new and interesting, they play something that sounds like Nickleback (Theory of a Deadman), mall punk (Simple Plan), or some hoary can-con standby (Tea Party).
Then there's the undereducated, unentertaining on-air people. If you're trying to keep/attract university educated listeners, it would help to have smart and/or knowledgeable DJs.
Dumbed down music. Dumbed down hosts. Dumbed down station.
If you want to hear what CFNY would sound like (musically) today: WOXY.COM

STAN:
Speaking Arcade Fire, the BDS data from R&R says that KROQ played "Neighbourhood Fire #3" 21 times this weak and 28 times the week before that. Still not listed on the CFNY BDS data. Now that they've broken through in the states and made every year end critic's list in the world, wouldn't it be time to consider it, especially now that the CD is in every mall in the country? BTW, looking at the BDS spin data for CFNY and CHUM-FM, it was CHUM-FM that played more independent titles.

If Win and Regine can keep them all from bursting into flames, The Arcade Fire will become the biggest Canadian band in history. They are already filling larger venues internationally than The Tragically Hip ever did. I'm sure that leading up to the Danforth shows the CFNY staff will start gushing. Still not sure what I prefer, the station ignoring them or the stupid staff jumping on my bandwagon.

I'm sure they'll present the show, and be handing out stickers, and pretending the band was an edge discovery.

If a Canadian band is not signed to a major who is willing to dump money into the station for advertising their band on the air if promised radio play which is sort of like legalized payola, then good luck getting played.

Pukey, you are right. They will jump all over it and claim it to be theirs.

This isn't how it used to be.

It's so extreamly sad to know that this is happening. I've gotten so used to what's played on the radio, I can predict what the station is going to next.
