Changes noticed on the current Edge

Alternative rock stations are on a down slide
in North America. The edge in Buffalo has become
Active Rock. Alan Cross` obligation is to make
money for Corus and produce a viable high rated station. It may sound cruel but that is reality. Sorry but esoteric and eclectic just doesn`t cut it.

Hey, it's an absolute privledge to be working with Alan, now. Even though I work down the Hall, I see Alan doing alot of positive things to the Edge. I actually first met Alan at the Spirit reunion, then the Casbys, now....the guy works down th Hall from me. Nice to have him here...great person.

Well, I'm glad to hear Alan Cross got the job as Program Director at Edge. Hopefully, he'll get to do things to make that Station what it once was & if not better!!!! Let's hope Alan does something to improve the music and on-air personalities....and why not bring some of the former personalities(Bookie doign Live On the Edge, Visjna......some of them are still young...The first thing Alan should do is get a better morning show....Make The Edge fun sounding again....

I would love it if The Edge reverted back to calling itself CFNY.

Highly respected call letters.

CFNY was it's people, and it's people loved playing the music they played as much as we loved listening to to.

Good to hear you're back Alan. Would love to hear
the MarsBar again at 102.1

a GUARANTEE: NOTHING will change! Why? the "EDGE" is a format which is controlled by CORUS who owns the CFNY, Q107, MOJO etc etc. The formats and playlists for these stations are strictly controlled by head office in the good ol' USA (who just throw in a few acceptable CANCON selections to comply with CRTC regulations) look around there are literally dozens of EDGES, Qs, Mojos etc all across North America and they are virtually all the same. not cynical just realistic!

There is no "head office" in the U.S. contributing directly to what you hear on 102.1. There are record company head offices that might determine what single gets pushed from any given album, with the input of radio consultants, which is all part and parcel of an elaborate collusion between the music industry and radio stations ... but even that's on the way out, as the labels lose their clout in the marketplace and the system as it's been known for the past quarter-century or so falls by the wayside. (That would be the same system CFNY was all about bucking.)

Not to detract from anyone's dissatisfaction (lawd knows I've had my share) but it helps to educate yourself on how the system works before you gripe about it. These days, you can see a new band on Letterman and, if it piqued your interest, instead of waiting three weeks or three months for yer local modern rock station to get around to "adding" it, and putting it through the whole market research mill, you can of course download it immediately (legally or not) ... use the web to immerse yourself in everything that act has to offer. This situation irrevocably changes the role of a CFNY, not to mention the fact of younger demographics who don't even *own* radios anymore ... it's an exciting time overall ... doesn't mean every radio owner is going to catch on, however.

Alan - I have done this privately and now wish to do it publicly. The best of luck in your new programming position.

Make it fun for yourself and always keep a passion - a real passion - for the music. You are the Program Director. Don't let anyone else tell you what to do - expecially those who must wear suits to qualify their positions.

However - no sense doing anything on Thursday or Friday nights between 7 PM and Midnight. That is when I do my shows at 94.9 FM (www.therock.fm) and well I need to have the city to myself.

If for no other reason than the fact that I am older than you ;-)

To quote a previous post:

"I would love it if The Edge reverted back to calling itself CFNY. Highly respected call letters."

CFNY (The Spirit of Radio) was highly enjoyed by many. In fact, it's the reason this great site exists. But highly respected by who? A relative few, I would say.

"CFNY" was not a commercial success, and that's why the station is what it is today -- more or less at Top 40 station that plays what people want to hear and that pulls in the money for Corus.

CFNY will not return -- it doesn't make business sense. Playing a bunch of obscure, underground acts will not improve ratings, and that's the bottom line these days (and forevermore).

The amount of hate... and negativity that is expressed in these group postings.. no matter what subject you look under really blows me away.

Times change... and things evolve. Music changes, people grow older. When it comes down to it, when you go back 15 years in YOUR life... the music you so often refer to here... was nothing more then the music the 102.1 The Edge plays now.

Think about that.

As for Mr. Alan Cross. When it comes to music, he knows it. His appointment to PROGRAM director, not MUSIC director, should have a definite effect on the sound of the station as a whole. The Edge caters to a certain age group and does this well.
Very well, as it continues to be voted one of the top stations in Toronto, and is rated as one of the top 10 most listened to radio stations in the world.

The only thing that matters is solid personalities. With that... they aren't doing too bad at all... solid all the way through... you have Dean and the show... perfect for their demo. You have Josie.... Barry Taylor (funny)... The Brother!! as well as the Martin and Dwight.. then A.J. in the overnights. All people who live the Edge lifestyle.. and cater to their demo flawlessly.

I love the way CFNY was.... and I enjoy the youthfull recklessness it is now. Here's a toast to a radio station that has shaped one generation... and is now doing it again to a whole new generation!

Keep the spirit alive!

Cheers
